Alberta Jade Bear Carving
A type of Petrified Wood, the Provincial stone of Alberta is commonly found throughout the province. Representing the province's prehistoric past, this beautiful petrified wood is formed as the result of microcrystalline quartz depositing into the pores and cells of trees that fell 60-90 million years ago during the Cretaceous and Paleocene periods. Fallen tress became saturated with water containing microcrystalline quartz, which literally turned the trees to stone as the water evaporated. Alberta Jade became Alberta's stone on May 18, 1977.
Like other fossils, Alberta Jade requires a lot of work in cleaning, polishing, and preparing the pieces for display. This is especially true of our hand-carved Alberta Jade carvings, which are made by a single artist from start to finish. This is very unusual compared to standard modern-day carving practices, which utilizes many carvers to make a single piece, however each of our unique carvings exemplifies the artist’s skill and their own personal creative flair.
