Fluorite is a soft gemstone.  It comes in various colors including green, blue, yellow, white, and sometimes a raspberry color but it is best known as a purple gemstone. Sometimes the fluorite will be banded or have several colours combined together.

Fluorite will break along cleavage points into a perfect octahedron shape. Mineral crystals of fluorite are prized by mineral collectors, and the gemstone form is often cut from massive formations of fluorite. Canadian sources of fluorite include Ontario but the stone is found worldwide.
